The first significant snowfall of the season in eastern Newfoundland ended being a roughly 10 to 15 cm snow event when parts of the Avalon expected upwards of 30-plus cm.
In fact, if you ask forecasters about the hardest weather to predict, at least in our part of the world, many would say winter weather. It has gotten easier, but it’s important to remember that the models predicting these storms are just guides and not entirely accurate. These are tools you use alongside other resources to help construct a weather forecast. When it comes to winter storms, it often only takes a difference of 50 to 100 km for the entire forecast to change, and that's not much.
Also, many of our storms generate over the ocean where there’s less real-time information for these models to work with. Weather models can also have a hard time projecting storms that are weak or just developing – which is usually before they reach us.Sadly, we can’t get them all right.Have a weather question you would like answered?
