The successful "experiment" closed one lane of traffic on George Street, allowing customers to dine at cafes and restaurants on outdoor tables.street is back to about 90 per cent of the foot traffic it had before the pandemic began and businesses are reporting a 15 per cent increase in revenue.Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes has made alfresco dining in The Rocks permanent.
"We knew that the safest place for us to socalise and help our businesses to keep operating was in the great outdoors," Stokes said. A design competition will be held to make the design permanent and the southern lane will remain open as it is critical for the Overseas Passenger Terminal traffic.
