An incoming New York congressman is being urged to resign after admitting that he lied about being Jewish, as well as falsely claiming he attended top colleges and worked for Wall Street banks.
Republican representative-elect George Santos revealed in an interview on Monday that he lied about working for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, as well as attending New York University, describing it as “résumé embellishment”.Credit:Rather than working on Wall Street in his pre-political career, he actually worked at a call centre in Queens making $US15 an hour.
“I didn’t graduate from any institution of higher learning. I’m embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my résumé,” he told theRepresentative elect George Santos speaks at an annual leadership meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition in November.He also admitted that he never worked directly for Goldman Sachs or Citigroup, blaming a “poor choice of words” for creating that impression.
Santos had not responded in full until now. He said he was determined to take the oath of office on January 3 and join the GOP House majority.Joaquin Castro, a Democrat representing Texas, tweeted: “George Santos should resign as Congressman-elect. If he refuses, Congress should expel him. He should also be investigated by authorities.”
