So far this year, Alberta RCMP jurisdictions are reporting the highest rates of stolen vehicles in May, March and June, with 857, 790 and 750 vehicle taken, respectively, said a news release. According to mounties, June, May and July were the top three months for property within the vehicles to be stolen with 778, 766, and 670 incidents, respectively.
Officers recommend a few simple habits and routines to reduce your chances of falling victim to thiefs:Never leave your keys or garage door openers in your vehicle.Ensure all valuables are removed or out of sight, including shopping bags, loose change, sunglasses and any electronics.If possible, store your vehicle in a locked garage when not in use.
Park your vehicle in well-lit areas and within sight. If you’re unable to park in a locked garage, keep outdoor lights on for added security. The public is asked to contact local police if they see something suspicious or call 911 in the case of a crime in progress.
