West Shore RCMP has formed a mental-health unit pairing officers with mental-health workers, as the number of calls increases.
A West Shore RCMP officer is recovering after being bitten by a person apprehended under the Mental Health Act.
Officers were called after the person involved said they had already harmed themselves and intended to do it again. Paramedics also arrived to deal with the person’s self-inflicted wounds, and it was at that time that the person became violent toward the officer by biting them and attempting to disarm them.
Police said the need for the unit has grown over the past five years for the detachment, which has seen a 39 per cent increase in mental-health-related calls — from 1,163 calls in 2018 to 1,622 calls in 2022. The West Shore RCMP unit will include one corporal and two constables. Insp. Stephen Rose, West Shore RCMP’s officer in charge of operations, said approval for the unit came after a request was made to the province and Island Health.
