An Albanese Government minister has weighed in on Australia's future as a constitutional monarchy following the 'drama' overnight surrounding the royals.

Albanese Government minister Ed Husic has declared Australia will sort out the issue of becoming a republic"in due course".

"I think there are a lot of people, particularly in the Labor Party, that have got a great ambition for the nation which is that we should have our own head of state, we should be able to have an Australian republic," Mr Husic said. "We should be able to be mature enough to have the debate and be able to stand on our two feet as a country. There's a lot of stuff that has been happening and, clearly, we're very respectful following the passing of Her Majesty.

Australia previously rejected becoming a republic in 1999 and the issue has never been voted on since, although it has been a focus of the Albanese Government. The voice would be a permanent body representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples that advises government on policies relating to Indigenous issues.
