Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has reversed changes made by the former Morrison government around citizenship ceremonies, in an effort to give councils more flexibility on Australia Day.

The Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code - amended by former prime minister Scott Morrison in 2019 - required local councils to host citizenship ceremonies on January 26 or otherwise lose the right to conduct them altogether.

The Immigration Minister hoped it would alleviate cost concerns for some councils that said hosting ceremonies on Australia Day came at a higher operational price due to it being a public holiday.Mr Giles also reinstated citizenship ceremony authority to Melbourne’s City of Yarra and Darebin City Councils.
