The Armed Forces of the Philippines is not inclined to recommend a ceasefire between government troops and communist rebels this holiday season, its spokesperson said Wednesday.
“Because in the past, we are talking about historical records, every time that a ceasefire is being declared, they take advantage,” Arevalo told CNN Philippines’ The Source. Interior Secretary Eduardo Año earlier rejected the idea of a Christmas truce with the communist groups, and instead urged rebels to return to their “peaceful” civilian lives.which also coincided with the group’s 50th founding anniversary. However, the government, at that time, also did not recommend a declaration for a truce.
