THE dean of the UP College of Engineering shared with the alumni during the UP Alumni Engineers Homecoming last month some revealing statistics on the reasons for academic delinquency of engineering students at UP Diliman for the academic year 2023-2024.
According to Dean Maria Antonia Tanchuling, only 60 percent of the freshmen students graduate from the college.Technical working group members on the drafting of the consolidated provisions of House Bill 6574 and Senate Bill 2200, which eventually passed as Republic Act 12080.
The reasons cited for academic delinquency are academic issues, which comprise 39 percent, followed by mental health at 24 percent, and financial challenges in third with 21 percent. Physical health follows at 5 percent, extracurricular activities at 3 percent, with 8 percent having unknown or unclear reasons.Academics, as expected, topped the list. What is surprising is that mental health problems, which were not given full attention before, came in second.
