CEBU CITY – With his six-month suspension, Mayor Michael Rama’s vision of a “Singapore-like Cebu City with Melbourne features” has to take a backseat.Acting Mayor Raymond Garcia admitted he is not too keen on pushing Rama’s dream of transforming the city like Singapore.
“Singapore is a dream and there are a lot of attributes of Singapore that we want to follow and emulate. And one of those attributes I think is discipline, peace, and order. That is something that we Cebuano should strive for. We Cebuanos should hope for and dream but I wouldn’t want, this is my stand, to brand Cebu as Singapore-like. Why? Because we will lose our identity as Cebu City,” Garcia said in a news forum on Tuesday, May 14.
Garcia said it would also be ironic that Cebu will be transformed into like Singapore when the city is older than Singapore. “Kita dugay na …hundreds of years and we cannot just throw it away,” Garcia said.“Why not call it, Cebu, a premium city of the Philippines, something like that. We don’t have to put it Cebu-Singapore. We will lose our identity.
Rama is serving a six-month suspension imposed against him and seven other Cebu City Hall officials by the Office of the Ombudsman.The suspension stemmed from the case that four City Hall workers filed after they were transferred to another department and were not paid with their salary for 10 months.
