The high-profile trial of Bruce Lehrmann over the alleged rape of Brittany Higgins will come under intense scrutiny in an inquiry announced by the ACT Government amid 'serious' allegations around police and prosecution conduct.
The ACT Government has announced an inquiry into the investigation and trial of Bruce Lehrmann after Brittany Higgins alleged she was raped inside Parliament House amid a slate of “serious" allegations around the case.Mr Lehrmann would not face another trial due to concerns over Ms Higgins’ health.
The ACT Government on Wednesday said its Board of Inquiry would probe whether judicial bodies including the DPP and the police discharged their duties with “appropriate rigour, impartiality and independence” following a “number of complaints and allegations” related to the trial. It will probe the engagement between the two bodies with a specific focus over the charges laid, the decision to proceed with the trial and the subsequent determination to scrap the expected re-trial.
