SYDNEY, N.S. — Move over Big Fiddle, there’s a new monument in town that could become the new centre of social media buzz in Cape Breton. The new ...
There’s a new landmark on the Sydney boardwalk in the form of a large Sydney sign. The Sydney Downtown Development Agency unveiled the new monument on Monday morning they hope will draw people downtown to view and photograph. Shortly after its unveiling, from the left, Danielle Patterson, Danielle Johnston, Emily MacLennan, Victoria Chapman and Stephanie MacLean lined up to have their photo taken in front of the sign.
It was unveiled Monday morning on the boardwalk behind City Hall under rainy skies and, despite the weather, people still posed for pictures in front of it. “A general rule of business is that business goes where the people are,” Wilson said. “So, if we can draw more people to our downtown core, it will only draw more businesses to the downtown and create a really vibrant and exciting space.”
“I see from my office up here people on this boardwalk all seasons, all days of the week and so to have this here I think we are going to see more people, which is wonderful.” “And one day I was scrolling through Facebook and a friend of mine who lives in the British Virgin Islands and her whole family was posing in front of their new block letters,” said Wilson. “And I was like ‘that was it. We have to have block letters for Sydney.’”
