Cape Breton Catalogue publisher Ron Caplan is calling for lower mailing rates through Canada Post. ContributedSYDNEY, N.S. — Cape Breton Catalogue publisher Ron Caplan is calling for lower mailing rates following his 50th year of publishing the catalogue.

This year, Caplan offered a flat shipping rate of $5 for any number of books sent to one address in Canada. According to Caplan, it costs him about $18 to mail just one book from Sydney to Baddeck—a distance of about 30 miles.In the U.S., the book would travel the same distance for USD$ 3.49, which is the regular rate offered by the U.S. postal service when books are sent as Media Mail."It costs me $23 to mail one book from Nova Scotia to British Columbia. And those mailing costs are a crippler in the budget of any small Canadian publisher.
