TO the seminarians who will be my philosophy students in the coming term:
I am preparing you — together with your other formators — to serve the Church as her priests. Unlike an ordinary faculty or college of philosophy, in a seminary, professors are part of the formation team. A life of prayer, discipline and community are integral to your philosophical studies.
When you say, for example: 'God exists,' what do you mean by that? Go back to the crucial propositions by which we live — you say, for example, 'God created the world.' How do you give a logical account of that? Do not use 'faith' to gloss over what you cannot explain.Start reading, and while I will mention many contemporary philosophers with you — Heidegger, Ricoeur, Wittgenstein, Whitehead, Hartshorne, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Hick, Foucault, Gadamer, Habermas, etc.
