KUALA LUMPUR — This year sees Malaysia taking over the rotating chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations . Even before it assumed the chairmanship earlier this year, there appeared to be high expectations surrounding this diplomatic role for Malaysia, with the admittedly lofty hope that it could lead both itself and the entire region toward a better future.
To expect Malaysia to lead the region and reverse this trend within a single year is like trying to fish in a tree — rather unrealistic, to say the least. This is not to say Malaysia lacks capability or leadership qualities, but rather that the task — or the mission — itself is practically impossible.
