KUWAIT has lifted its ban on Filipino workers, ending a year of strained relations with the Philippines over recurring labor concerns.The Arab Gulf country has long been a prime destination for Filipino s seeking jobs abroad. Close to 270,000 Filipino s worked there before the ban was imposed, about a third of them as domestic helpers.In 2022, remittances from Filipino workers in Kuwait reached $597 million.

The kafala has been widely denounced by human rights groups as opening the door to the exploitation of workers, who are frequently denied legal recourse.Ranara's plight prompted the Philippines to impose a deployment ban to Kuwait. In retaliation, Kuwait stopped processing the visas of arriving Filipinos.Following the death of Ranara, more than 100 Filipinos escaped their employers and flew out of Kuwait.
