A destabilizing presence
NAVAL drills involving the Philippines, the United States, Australia and Japan have once again raised hackles in Beijing, which accused Manila of colluding with others to destabilize the region. The accusation is ironic, as any instability in the region is caused by the Chinese leadership's jingoistic foreign policy and its clear acts of aggression in the West Philippine Sea.
The court also found that China violated Unclos by building artificial islands, installations and structures on Panganiban Reef, which is part of the Philippines' EEZ and continental shelf. While China is a signatory to the treaty establishing the tribunal, it refuses to accept the court's authority. It has also consistently violated Unclos, to which it is a signatory.
