The Australian’s Legal Affairs Editor Chris Merritt says the “number one reform needed” in Victoria is to give the judiciary the option “to have a judge alone trial” in special cases where there is a clear risk to a fair trial.

Mr Merritt discussed this in reference to the trial of Cardinal George Pell in 2018, who had to face a jury in the Victorian justice system. The High Court of Australia unanimously quashed Cardinal Pell’s conviction following a failed appeal to the Victorian Court of Appeal in 2020.
