A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Peru on Sunday, claiming the life of one person and triggering landslides, authorities reported. The tremor, which occurred shortly before noon, was centered approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) from Callao, a port city adjacent to the capital Lima, according to the National Seismological Center. The US Geological Survey recorded the magnitude at 5.6. Peru vian officials stated that the earthquake did not elicit a tsunami warning.
A man in Lima met his demise when a wall collapsed onto the car he was driving, as confirmed by the National Police. Moreover, the Emergency Operations Center reported five injuries in Lima. President Dina Boluarte called for public composure, emphasizing the absence of a tsunami warning for the South American nation's Pacific coastline. TV channel Latina broadcast footage depicting landslides in several areas of the capital city. The earthquake also led to the suspension of a major football match underway in Lima. Peru, home to 34 million people, is situated on the so-called 'Ring of Fire,' a region characterized by intense seismic and volcanic activity encircling the Pacific basin. Peru experiences, on average, at least 100 detectable earthquakes annually. The most recent significant quake, in 2021 in the Amazon region, registered a magnitude of 7.5, injuring 12 people and destroying over 70 homes.
