The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) revealed that 59 Filipinos are on death row in various countries. Most cases involve murder, with many prisoners in countries like Malaysia and Saudi Arabia that have informal moratoriums on capital punishment. The DFA is working to secure pardons from families of victims in countries like Saudi Arabia. Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipino who escaped execution in Indonesia, recently returned to the Philippines to serve her sentence. She hopes President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will grant her clemency. While there is no decision yet on her case, some senators are calling for increased government support for Filipinos incarcerated abroad.
“For those in countries like Saudi Arabia, we continue to try to find ways for them to be pardoned by families of the persons they killed,” dagdag ni De Vega.
"How we can assist to make their detention, in the meantime, more bearable. To check with their families here if they are alright and how we can help them visit and see their loved one deprived of their liberty abroad," dagdag niya.
