MANILA - More than 500 more Filipinos working abroad returned to the Philippines on Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said, joining thousands of other OFWs repatriated due to the COVID-19 pan
demic.
The DFA said in a statement that 515 OFWs from Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia arrived on 3 separate flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. "The repatriates were immediately subjected to rapid testing for COVID-19 upon their arrival. They were also briefed on quarantine protocols before they were transported to designated facilities where they will undergo mandatory quarantine for 14 days," the department said in a statement Wednesday.
Government earlier set up quarantine facilities in Manila where repatriates would spend their isolation period before heading to their respective hometowns. More than 20,000 Filipino migrant workers have been repatriated since the disease started to rapidly spread worldwide. The pathogen has been wreaking havoc across the globe since its first emergence in China late last year.
Since the global outbreak, over 1,600 Filipinos overseas have contracted the disease, among whom 199 have died and 434 have recovered.
