A moderate earthquake shook Occidental Mindoro on Monday evening, prompting alerts and causing noticeable shaking in several areas across the Philippines.
A 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook Occidental Mindoro at 6:42 p.m. on Monday, January 20, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). Phivolcs initially reported the quake's origin near Calatagan, Batangas, with a magnitude of 5.4, but later revised it to 5.5. In an updated bulletin, the earthquake's epicenter was determined to be 23 kilometers northeast of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, at a depth of 116 kilometers.
The tremor was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, and Intensity III (weak) in several areas, including Quezon City, Makati City, Taguig City, Obando in Bulacan, Hermosa in Bataan, Cainta in Rizal, and Cabuyao City in Laguna. It was also registered at Intensity II (slightly felt) in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Cuenca and Talisay in Batangas; and Tagaytay City and Bacoor in Cavite. Additionally, it was felt at Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Muntinlupa City. Phivolcs stated that the earthquake was tectonic in origin, caused by the movement of an active fault in the region
