As of 8 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 2, Phivolcs had detected 345 aftershocks, of which 29 were plotted by three or more stations.Phivolcs said the 6.0-magnitude earthquake was most likely generated by the movement along the Philippine Fault. According to Phivolcs, the 1,200-kilometer-long Philippine fault zone is a major tectonic feature that transects the whole Philippine archipelago from northwestern Luzon to southeastern Mindanao.
It pointed out that this arc-parallel, left-lateral strike-slip fault is divided into several segments and has been the source of large-magnitude earthquakes in recent years, such as the 1973 Ragay Gulf earthquake , 1990 Luzon earthquake , and 2003 Masbate earthquake .
