tv Eight governors and 181 mayors nationwide were stripped of their powers over the police under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, the interior department said Wednesday.

These local chief executives lost their police power due to alleged involvement with illegal drugs, failure to stop terrorism and support for extremist groups, said Interior Assistant Secretary and Spokesperson Jonathan Malaya. The 189 officials can no longer choose their area's chief of police, direct law enforcement operations and chair the peace and order council, he told radio DZMM.

"Ang PNP na po ang bahala sa peace and order situation sa lugar... Iyon nga lang, hindi na sila kukuha ng direksyon sa LGU," he said. There was no official stripped of police powers during the previous Aquino administration, said Malaya.
