After being held captive by Houthi rebels for more than a year, 17 Filipino seafarers have been released and returned to the Philippines. The crew members of the cargo ship MV Galaxy Leader arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Thursday, greeted by government officials and their families.
THE 17 Filipino seafarers held captive by Houthi rebels in Yemen for over a year have all returned to the Philippines, the Department of Migrant Workers and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration announced.The crewmen of the cargo ship MV Galaxy Leader arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 9:31 p.m. on Thursday on a flight from Muscat, Oman.
The 17 Filipino seafarers are hugged by their families at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport after they arrived on the night of Jan. 23, 2025, from Oman. The seafarers were freed by the Houthi rebels who held them hostage for a year after their oil tanker, the MV Galaxy Leader, was seized in Yemen in November 2023.
The seafarers were reunited with their families at the airport and were later debriefed by the DMW and OWWA.'The long wait is over. Our prayers were answered. I join the Filipino nation in welcoming back to the Philippines the 17 Filipino hostages. Their pleasant disposition, resilience in spirit and strength as a team saw them through this most difficult ordeal,' Manalo said.
