CEBU CITY — Sixteen television sets were discovered waterlogged in the basement of the education office during a recent inspection, raising serious questions over the city’s procurement and storage practices following its hosting of the 2024 Palarong Pambansa.

The inspection at Department of Education Cebu City Division on July 25 was led by Vice Mayor Tomas Osmeña, who chairs the City Council’s Committee on Education. The site visit followed the severe flooding on July 16, which inundated various parts of the city, including the DepEd office on Imus Avenue where the 55-inch LED televisions had been stored. The basement, which also houses the Division Health and Nutrition Clinic, was not spared from the heavy rains and murky flood water.

Young said the area had been repurposed and was already occupied by personnel from the Commission on Tourism.Young explained that the television sets had been procured for the Palarong Pambansa but were excess units that were never used or distributed. He said they had initially been stored in a warehouse in Barangay Labangon before being transferred to the basement of the DepEd office due to space constraints.
