A conservation organization in Naic, Cavite, has released 157 Olive Ridley sea turtle hatchlings into their natural habitat. The Samahan ng Labac Pawikan Patroller (SLPP) monitors the laying of eggs, protects them from predators, and releases the hatchlings at night. The event was a lead-up to the 14th annual Pawikan Festival, scheduled for February 7, 2025, which will feature a float parade, storytelling contest, and slogan/logo making contest.
NAIC, Cavite — A conservation organization here has released 157 Olive Ridley hatchlings to their natural habitat in the shore of Barangay Labac in this town on late Friday afternoon.Roger Bilugan, leader of the Samahan ng Labac Pawikan Patroller , personally led the release of the olive ridley sea turtles hatchlings from the organization's Labac Conservatory Facility on the banks of Barangay Labac.
'We, the volunteers Pawikan Patrollers, observe the shore of Labac, day and night to monitor the laying of Pawikan eggs during their breeding season, to wrap the eggs, so that dogs don't eat them and to take care of them until they hatch,' said Bilugan in an interview.According to the group, they usually release the hatchlings when it is already dark to protect them from predators such as birds.
