Prosecutors in Newfoundland and Labrador are seeking the province's first conviction for human trafficking, but advocates warn the absence of court cases shouldn't indicate trafficking isn't happening.
The suspects, ranging from ages 20 to 60, face charges related to child luring, obtaining sexual services and inviting sexual exploitation of a young person, Niagara, Ont., police say. The local YWCA says the Niagara Region is an "epicentre" for trafficking in the province.The YWCA Niagara Region says it's often difficult to investigate or lay charges related to human trafficking because some survivors may not want to pursue justice through the court system.
The men who were arrested are mostly from the Niagara Region. One is from Windsor, Ont., and another is from Buffalo, N.Y., police say. Under the Criminal Code, human trafficking is defined as recruiting, transferring, receiving, holding, concealing or harbouring a person and exercising control to exploit them.The YWCA Niagara Region describes Niagara as an "epicentre" for human trafficking for sexual, labour and domestic exploitation.
