In a letter sent to the Conservative Party's national council, some grassroots party members are protesting the appointment of former Ontario cabinet minister Parm Gill as a federal candidate without a nomination election, calling it “both unfair and undemocratic.” Gill has been officially appointed as the candidate for Milton, Ont, which is currently held by Liberal MP Adam van Koeverden.
“Your appointment of someone who’s focus will be on Milton suggests that we may not be well represented,” the letter states, which has been signed by 19 board members. “We are asking that you respect the democratic processes set out in the Constitution of the Conservative Party of Canada, as well as the wishes of the party membership. We plan to establish a new EDA and conduct candidate selection process in a fair, open and transparent manner.
