“This is what Debbie and I envisaged — it’s a special place,” Ken Rubin said in an interview Monday. “To me, it’s like a triple win for the environment: There will be a mixed planting of native trees, it will help to fight climate change, and it will give the community a new, green space with walking paths and an educational experience.”
The Rubins bought the property in the late 1970s. It featured a small cabin and a tool shed and had no electricity or running water. The family camped on the site as they learned to grow vegetables and flowers using organic methods. Although he has been an organic farmer for most of his adult life, Rubin is best known as an access-to-information expert.
