Jeff Redden, the owner of Windsor Home Hardware, told the crowd gathered at the tree planting announcement in Victoria Park on Sept. 29 that he hopes to enjoy sitting under the new tree canopy in 40 years’ time. - Carole Morris-Underhill, Dutch elm disease was first reported in Liverpool in 1969, likely “brought to North America in wooden crates made of elm wood.”Fungi infect the tree when the larvae of bark beetles — both native and exotic — tunnel under the outer bark.

“If you have all of your eggs in one basket, all your trees in one area and a disease comes along, it can wipe them out. That’s exactly what happened in the '70s,” said Redden. The investment in the tree canopy was announced in the park on Sept. 29, marking the 30th anniversary of a partnership between Tree Canada and Home Hardware. Zebian said the investment in Victoria Park is a great start to revitalizing the downtown green space.
