The Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVet) has recognized three villages as the 2024 Most Pet-Friendly Barangay in Zamboanga City , an official said Thursday, December 26, 2024. Dr. Arcadio Cavan, OCVet chief, said the recognition forms part of the city’s campaign towards rabies control and eradication.Cavan said the three most pet-friendly villages are the following: Mampang, 1st place; Tumaga, 2nd; and Boalan, 3rd.
Cavan said Mampang was awarded P20,000 cash prize and a plaque as the top most pet-friendly village.Mampang was also recognized for obtaining the highest number of animals turned over to the City Pound and received an additional P5,000 cash prize. Tumaga as the second placer received P15,000 cash prize and a plaque and Boalan, the third place, was awarded P10,000 cash prize and a plaque.Cavan said the giving of the award was based on the following criteria: organization of barangay rabies control and eradication committee; appointment of barangay animal catchers, number of animals turned over to the City Pound Office and number of animals vaccinated against rabies during the Oplan Alis Rabies Campaign. “These criteria are based on the functions of the barangays stipulated under City Ordinance 673 or the Veterinary Code of Zamboanga City,” Cavan said.Meanwhile, he said Barangay Sto. Niño was recognized as the village with the highest number of animals vaccinated during the Oplan Alis Rabies campaign, with an impressive achievement of 165.44 percent of the 100 percent target.
