Back in early April this year, YouTube introduced enhanced 1080p for iPhone YouTube Premium users. However, that option is making its way to Premium users globally on their desktops as it was confirmed by a YouTube spokesperson.
The YouTube spokesperson, Paul Pennington confirmed it with The Verge. One of the writers from that news platform also saw the enhanced 1080p option on his Chrome web browser but of course, only those who are subscribed to YouTube Premium can use it. In my case here, the feature is only appearing on some videos so it's rolling out now as we speak.
For those who missed it, the enhanced 1080p is a bitrate version of 1080p. This means that the bitrate will offer more information per pixel, hence producing a higher-quality viewing experience. Enhanced 1080p Premium isn't available for Live Streams, Shorts, and uploaded videos that are higher or lower than 1080p.
In addition, YouTube also confirmed that enhanced 1080p is coming to living room devices. This includes Chromecasts and video game consoles, but Android users will have to wait for it.
