Students in kindergarten to year two as well as year 11 will be the first to return to school in term four as part of a staged reopening once NSW’s vaccination rates hit 70 per cent.

Dr Chant said she was optimistic children aged 12 to 15 could be vaccinated this year, although it would not be until the “new year” that younger children were considered. Of the state’s new cases to 8pm on Sunday, more than 120 of them were in children aged nine and under, while a further 160 cases were confirmed in people under 19.

In Victoria, 112 of the state’s 494 active cases are under the age of 10, while 100 are between the ages of 10 and 19, and 79 are in their 20s.
