A young mother who lost her son and husband at one of Sydney's popular beaches is calling for more to be done to warn about the dangers of rock fishing.

Hasti Masoumi, her husband Payam and 10-year-old son Mahan went rock fishing at a favourite beachside location; it was a trip that would change her life forever."I was thinking fishing is really peaceful sport," Ms Masoumi said.Hasti, Mahan and Payam Masoumi.

"Drowning is a very, very silent action. I didn't hear anything. Any shouting, any screaming, anything." Two-thirds of fatalities are people born overseas, according to an analysis by Surf Life Saving Australia., while they are already compulsory at Salmon Holes in Western Australia, which has been identified as a black spot for drowning deaths and injuries.

Six people died while rock fishing from Hill 60 near Port Kembla between January 2021 and April 2022. Wollongong Council voted later that year to make life jackets mandatory. "In the first 12 months, it'll be an educational process where they won't necessarily issue fines, but get involved in terms of reminding rock fishers to wear life jackets."Kharis Lianto has fished from Sydney's eastern-suburbs rock platforms since he was a teenager. He said the appearance of the ocean could be deceiving.
