From new spaces, to walks to honour those lost and still losing, 2022 has been a year of reflection and reconciliation

It has been another year on the path to reconciliation; although often taking two steps forward and one back. With the remembrance of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people, the work to bring the children from residential schools home, and even words from the Pope, there have also been new spaces in Sudbury, safe places to honour ancestors, to hold ceremony, but also to help the First Nations people of this area gather once more.

Indigenous Peoples Day brought celebration, and a mini-pow wow at Bell Park. Almost 500 people gathered at the annual event, held to honour the summer solstice — the longest day of the year — and the first time many could gather for pow wow after two years of pandemic lockdown. More recently, the long held goal of Atikameksheng Anishnawbek came to fruition with the opening of the Community Support Hub. Located at 66 Elm Street, the hub provides resources to all their Debendaagziwaad . The result of several years of work, and most recently, a state of emergency, it’s a place for the more than 60 per cent of members who live off-reserve, especially for those who need mental health, addiction or cultural support.
