The AFP later revealed that “The Monster” had been conducting intrusive patrols in the Philippine EEZ since June. The Russian submarine"UFA 490" is detected by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and escorted by the Philippine Navy 80 nautical miles west of Cape Calavite, Occidental Mindoro on Nov. 28, 2024.
The PN said the Russian submarine was possibly refueling and recharging its batteries while on its way to its port in Vladivostok, Russia when spotted by the AFP. The sighting came in the wake of Russian Pacific Fleet’s announcement that UFA 490 conducted a passage exercise with Malaysian Navy vessels in the South China Sea on Nov. 25.
