Xiaomi wants to elevate its smartphone camera game by adding a variable aperture lens that switches between f/1.9 to f/4.0 for its 1-inch main camera. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra will come with four 50MP cameras.

and this will be their ultimate mobile photography tool which succeeds last year’s Xiaomi 12S Ultra. Ahead of next week’s launch, Xiaomi has dropped more details for its latest flagship smartphone with cameras co-developed with Leica.

Besides having a massive 1-inch sensor like the Xiaomi 12S Ultra and the current Xiaomi 12 Pro, the new Xiaomi 13 Ultra is getting a variable aperture lens to provide users more control over the depth of field. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra’s main camera can switch between f/1.9 for more bokeh and f/4.0 for sharper backgrounds.

The new flagship device has four instead of three cameras, and each of them are using 50MP sensors. The main 50MP camera uses Sony’s IMX989 sensor while the remaining three cameras for ultra-wide, telephoto and super-telephoto use Sony’s. The IMX858 is a smaller 1/2.51″ image sensor that supposedly offers All-pixel Auto Focus. The device is also capable of shooting 8K videos.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra also uses a Leica co-engineered Summicron lens which claims to integrate Leica’s high-performance optical lens in a compact form factor. The new lens uses an ultra high-order polynomial lens design that’s made with nanometer-level precision. It also gets a high-stability coating which ensures excellent optical performance in both extreme heat and cold situations.

Interestingly, one of the teasers uploaded on Weibo shows a chunky camera body which appears to be an add-on accessory for the new Xiaomi 13 Ultra.
