China’s Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian is a “smooth operator”, and we should take what he says as an “elaborate diplomatic game” and with a “substantial grain of salt”, former Defence Intelligence analyst and author Paul Monk says.
This comes after Xiao described 2022 as a year of “turnaround” regarding Australia’s relationship with China.
“China, I think, has become aware … that its attempts to coerce Australia and bully Australia have actually not worked,” Mr Monk told Sky News host James Morrow.“In an important sense, they are now pulling in their horns because they’ve realised it was counter-productive.”
