On the eve of the AUKUS submarine deal, Xi Jinping has stepped up his rhetoric around protecting China’s security interests.

Xi Jinping has vowed to build China’s armed forces into a “great wall of steel” to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and crush any push for Taiwan’s independence in a hawkish speech on the eve of the announcement ofIn an address to close China’s annual parliamentary session, Mr Xi used robust language to emphasise his government’s focus on security issues at a time when relations with the US have hit new lows and concern about Beijing’s plans for Taiwan grows.

While Mr Xi has used the “great wall of steel” in earlier speeches, his latest comments come as security tensions ratchet higher throughout the region. Anthony Albanese will on Tuesday announce details of the purchase of nuclear-powered submarines with help from the US and Britain in a deal designed to address security concerns about China.

“I’m afraid that reaching our growth target of around 5 per cent will be no easy task, and will require that we redouble our efforts,” Mr Li acknowledged in his first news conference since taking office as premier on Saturday.
