The almost 3,000 member-strong National People's Congress on Friday voted unanimously for Xi in an hour-long election where there was reportedly no other candidate.

Nevertheless, Xi's third term had been highly anticipated after the constitution was changed to abolish the traditional two-term limit on presidency, fuelling suggestions he could retain power for life.
