The Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks meet for Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night.
ARLINGTON, Tex. – One day last winter, when they were working out in Arizona, Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith watched Corbin Carroll do something unexpected. Carroll, already considered a key piece of the team’s future, whose maturity and dedication the Diamondbacks trusted so completely that they signed him to an eight-year deal worth $111 million before he played his first full season, pulled out his phone.
Carroll wasn’t taking a break to scroll Instagram, change the music or catch up on texts. Instead, Smith watched as Carroll opened something that looked like a spreadsheet to check off the work he had just done. “I was like, ‘What the heck?’ ” Smith said because even the neurotic subset that makes up professional baseball does not track its movements quite as closely as Carroll. “He’s very routine-oriented and organized.
