Delegates and oil executives from across the globe arrived in Calgary over the weekend for the World Petroleum Congress, which began Sunday.

“The innovation that’s happening in the industry, it’s coming right here in Calgary and Edmonton and Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray. This is where it’s all happening,” he said. “I don’t see that there’s any incongruence with it being here in Alberta at all, I think Alberta wants to lead.” Alberta Energy Minister Brian Jean said the provincial government welcomed all participating delegates — about 5,000 of them — with open arms. With the event’s focus on green tech this year, Jean said Alberta can “can help shape the global energy future.”
Jean said the provincial government remains “future-focused,” and he plans to meet with as many delegates as he can over the coming days. Demonstrators were anticipated to gather sometime Sunday ahead of the opening ceremonies. Mayor Gondek said she would not be attending the rally due to scheduling constraints but said activists should challenge and engage “in a way that is civil and actually produces some results.”
