The Omicron wave emerging in South Africa may soon spread to Australia, but some experts say it is likely to have less impact than previous waves.
The world is watching what looks like a fifth wave of COVID-19 building in South Africa, where omicron was first identified late last year.
Should this happen, the new wave could just begin to gather momentum in the final weeks of the election campaign, with Among those who had been infected with the original omicron variant, there was an eightfold drop in neutralising antibody production when tested against these sub-lineages.“The low absolute neutralising levels for BA.4 and BA.5, particularly in the unvaccinated group, are unlikely to protect well against symptomatic infection,” the researchers wrote.
“As this fifth wave emerges, the vast majority of patients with COVID-19 in our hospitals have been admitted for other conditions, and incidentally have been found to have COVID-19,” says Dr Richard Friedland*, CEO of Netcare, the largest provider of private healthcare in the country with 53 hospitals and the largest emergency services division.
