After Aussies watched 44 million hours of the World Cup in Qatar, SBS says it should be put back on the government’s free-to-air priority sport list.

The FIFA World Cup should be legally enshrined as a free-to-air television sporting event, broadcaster SBS says – along with the Tour de France and elite women’s sport like AFLW, women’s cricket and the women’s World Cup.

The current list includes the Olympic Games, all AFL games, all NRL games and all Australian Open matches – “Without regulation, exclusive coverage of significant sporting events would move to SVOD platforms ,” SBS wrote in a submission to the review. It said that free-to-air broadcasters, which can reach both those with internet through their apps and those with a TV aerial, should remain the first port of call for sports on the anti-siphoning list. And more sporting events should be added.

The position puts the SBS at odds with Optus, which has its own streaming platform, Optus Sport, and which has called for a radical overhaul of the anti-siphoning list.
