The true believers came from far and wide. Still high off the party’s federal victory in May, the NSW Labor faithful packed out Sydney’s Town Hall on Saturday for their first in-person state conference since 2018.

Between a sea of red chairs stretched a long aisle, ready and waiting for the arrival of their Marrickville man: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.Welcome to NSW Labor State Conference 2022.

The significance of Albanese’s attendance was not lost on any of the hundreds of party and union delegates in the room - the first sitting prime minister to address a conference since Kevin Rudd in 2013 and the first NSW prime minister since Paul Keating. After ten years as the pariah of federal Labor, the NSW branch was in lock-step on Saturday vowing to end 11 years of opposition and secure a Chris Minns victory in the March state election, as the party eyes a mainland sweep to govern in every state and territory except Tasmania.

At the last state election in 2019, the NSW branch was considered “the worst house on the best street,” where governance was lacking and campaigning was tired, said general secretary Bob Nanva.
