“I doubt there's a deep-breathing exercise that stands up well to 100-kilometre an hour winds, But it's a good idea to remind yourself that this is temporary,' says Dalhousie University professor and clinical psychologist Dr. Simon Sherry.
Dalhousie University professor and clinical psychologist Dr. Simon Sherry says anxiety could lead to catastrophic thinking during a storm. Ryan Taplin - The Chronicle HeraldHALIFAX, N.S. — A Dalhousie University professor and clinical psychologist says people suffering from anxiety brought on by hurricane Fiona's arrival should remember this is a temporary event.
Sherry said people in Atlantic Canada are a “resilient bunch” so it's a good time to be reminded of that and be careful that certain errors in thinking don't magnify anxiety. That's not to minimize the disruption the storm brings, but most Nova Scotians are not going to be clinging to their lives, Sherry added.
“But anxiety has an adaptive and a protective function. And here, reasonable anxiety would encourage you to take precautions and to follow credible suggestions. And anxiety can promote safety and survival by encouraging you to cope actively to solve problems and to take action.” Anxiety and fear in one person readily spreads to another and one person talking out loud can turn into two people co-ruminating. So strive to keep that to a minimum.
