Foreign Minister Penny Wong says Australia’s relationship with India remains “deep and firm”, despite the rising power’s continued military dependence on Russia | KnottMatthew
While not abandoning Russia, India has recently embraced the “Quad” partnership as a way to push back on China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific.
Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi recently chided Vladimir Putin for an ill-timed war despite the countries’ longstanding military ties.Senator Wong welcomed India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, noting he told Vladimir Putin in September that now is “not the time for war”.Wong declined to say whether Australia was urging India to vote against Russia in an upcoming resolution on the annexation of four Ukrainian regions.
In a clear criticism of the United States’ longstanding military partnership with neighbouring Pakistan, Jaishankar said India had turned to Russia out of necessity.“For multiple decades western countries did not supply weapons to India and in fact saw a military dictatorship next to us as the preferred partner.”Asked whether India would vote to condemn Russia’s annexations in Ukraine, he said it was not the country’s practice to predict its votes.
“We believe that this conflict does not serve the interests of anybody, neither the participants nor indeed of the international community.”
