A woman who was crushed to death by a falling tree branch in Darwin was a South African national, police say. Witnesses rushed to help the 28-year-old woman and her husband, 33, who were both hit by the branch at George Brown Botanic Gardens about 1pm on Sunday. Despite their efforts and those of paramedics, the woman could not be revived. “I understand it was a confronting scene,” Northern Territory Police Acting Commander Peter Kennon said.
Kennon said the branch fell from an African mahogany tree as the couple walked past, and that a number of other people in the garden “rendered assistance immediately”. He said the couple had only been in Darwin for a short time for work. Northern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said it was “a terrible accident”.
