With war never far from mind, B.C. Ukrainian Cultural Festival's focus is celebration

Festival is about the children and the dances, and about embracing the culture.

Darka Morin, president of the festival, says that the organizers are trying to keep the focus on the competition and the young dancers who will be participating.

“The war is a terrible thing and we want to show that we’re resilient people. We want to stay strong for Ukraine. We know that lots of people have family there. And we’re embracing all the new people that have come here from Ukraine as immigrants, and refugees. This is why we feel it’s important do put on this event.”

Though not Ukrainian herself, Tretiak’s husband is, and they’ve travelled to the country eight times since 2000. The paintings are based on photos she’s taken while visiting Ukraine. Hanna at 90 is one of the 30 paintings that Lyn Tretiak will be selling to raise money for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine at this year’s B.C. Ukrainian Cultural Festival at Clarke Theatre in Mission May 6.The work includes a portrait of her husband’s first cousin, Hanna, who lived in a village near Lviv — she died in 2016 at age 93 — and another of Ukrainian dancers.“We visited there twice while on trips up and down the Dnieper River.
